The history of Ashura
The next Ashura, 10 Muharram 1449 AH, falls on Tuesday 15 June 2027.
Musa and Pharaoh
The fast of Ashura recalls the day Allah saved Musa and his people and drowned Pharaoh, which the Jews of Madinah marked with a fast when the Prophet arrived (Sahih al-Bukhari 2004). The Quran tells the crossing: the sea was parted for them and Pharaoh’s army drowned behind them (Quran 26:63–66).

Karbala, 61 AH
Ashura is also the anniversary of the battle of Karbala in Iraq, on 10 Muharram 61 AH (October 680 CE), in which al-Husayn ibn Ali, Muhammad’s grandson, was killed with members of his family and companions.
Muslims of every tradition remember him; for Shia Muslims the first ten days of Muharram are a time of mourning that culminates on Ashura.
