How to fast Ashura

Like any day of fasting: sehri before Fajr, stop at Fajr, break the fast at sunset. The table gives those times for the 9th and 10th in the UK’s main cities.

After Ramadan the best fasting is in Allah’s month of Muharram, the Prophet said (Sahih Muslim 1163), so some fast other days of the month too. The fast of Ashura expiates the sins of the year before (Sahih Muslim 1162).

Food and water aid reaches families in need, with every pound shown.

Planning Ashura around work and school

Ashura moves about eleven days earlier each year, and in the next few years it falls in late spring and early summer, when UK days are at their longest: a fast from Fajr to sunset can run to 18 hours or more across much of the UK. Start with a good sehri and keep the day light.
